In today’s world, data drives everything—from the apps on our phones to the decisions companies make. Kennesaw State University (KSU) is leading the way with the nation’s first Ph.D. in Data Science and Analytics, helping students become leaders in this exciting field.
Data science jobs are among the fastest-growing occupations with employment expected to grow 35% between 2022 to 2032. Graduates can pursue a range of job opportunities like financial data scientists, healthcare analysts, machine learning engineers, quantitative researcher, business intelligence directors, and more. The possibilities are endless, whether developing new technologies that change our way of life or leading data strategies that transform businesses.
As of late, organizations are increasingly relying on data-driven insights and professionals who are adept at handling data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that some employers prefer or require candidates with a master’s or doctoral degree for Data Science positions. KSU’s Ph.D. program makes it possible for students to excel in this competitive job market.
As an institution at the forefront of developing academic advancement opportunities, KSU remains committed to nurturing the next generation of data science leaders, researchers, and educators. In support of the Ph.D. program, data science and analytics classes are offered across general education, as well as the minor, bachelor’s, and master’s programs, in both face-to-face and online modalities. This comprehensive approach makes KSU a one-stop shop for data science education. Students don’t have to worry about transferring anywhere else to fulfill their academic aspirations.
Our program is designed to propel students to a successful career in data science with the capabilities to complement and shape this rapidly evolving field. To do that, students need support. We’re proud to say KSU is supported by industry, government, and organizational partnerships that seek innovative solutions to data-centric problems through our Center for Data Science and Analytics (CDSA) and the Human Studies Lab—two of the most dynamic research units at the university.
Future doctorates in data science and analytics will have the resources necessary to tackle practical, real-world applications; they won’t just learn theory, they’ll put learning into practice. Our students engage in hands-on projects and research within the lab that directly addresses current challenges faced by businesses, governments, and communities. Everything from predictive analytics and machine learning (think AI) to ethical data governance.
One of the key strengths of the Ph.D. program is the ability to bypass a traditional master’s degree for those who have completed a quantitative bachelor’s degree. Through an embedded Master of Science (MS) pathway, students can transition from undergraduate studies to the doctoral program, accelerating their education and entry into the field. This approach allows students to build on their existing knowledge and dive deeper into advanced topics without pausing for a separate master’s degree.
Opportunity isn’t limited to the classroom though. Those on the pathway to a Data Science and Analytics career can also participate in Analytics Day at the end of fall and spring semesters. This event invites data science leaders and organizations to campus to meet the next generation of data science professionals. Students can connect with industry professionals to showcase their work, network, and explore potential collaborations.
As KSU continues to lead the way in data science education, we’re dedicated to empowering our students with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to excel in a rapidly evolving field.
Developing the first Ph.D. Engaging in groundbreaking research. Facilitating valuable industry connections. Our graduates will not only be masters of their field, but leaders in the progression of data-driven science.
